Directors of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center’s pulmonary ECMO program held a September 16, 2010 symposium on ECMO in the adult patient. The seminar covered the most up-to-date techniques, benefits, applications, and appropriate uses of ECMO in the adults with respiratory failure. It included both didactic sessions and a wet lab where attendees received hands-on ECMO training.
Participants included over 150 cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, intensive care specialists, perfusionists, pulmonologists, respiratory therapists, thoracic surgeons, and clinicians who treat patients on ECMO.

To follow up on this event, the Department of Surgery held a one-day educational symposium on November 30 focusing on the clinical evidence, benefits, and appropriate uses of monitoring tissue oxygenation (StO2) in emergency, trauma, and critical care patients.
