Dr. James A. Lee on The Dr. Oz Show: How to Test Your Thyroid

by Columbia Surgery on October 21, 2010

Dr. James A. Lee, Chief of Endocrine/Thyroid Surgery of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center was on The Dr. Oz Show to discuss the detection of thyroid cancer.

Dr. Lee says that fifteen to thirty percent of the U.S. population have thyroid nodules. Most are not cancerous. When a lump is found, a needle biopsy is performed to see if the nodule is malignant or benign. In the event of cancer, the thyroid gland is removed and the patient takes a pill to replace the hormones normally produced in the gland.

I would like my mother to see Dr Lee for hard lesions on her thyroid. She has Medicare and supplemental insurance through being a retired NJ school teacher for over 25 years. Her endocrinologist has recommended a thyroid biopsy because of ultrasound results. Does Dr Lee take Medicare? If not, who would you recommend? Thank you
