At one time, women waited till everything started to sag and drop before having it all lifted. The result? Too often, a change in appearance so dramatic and ‘overdone’ that it was plainly obvious that she had had surgery.

Today, women can enjoy a far more subtle and less invasive approach: incremental treatments to help maintain their beauty over the course of their adult lives.

Led by Robert T. Grant, MD, FACS, the Division of Plastic Surgery has developed Life Stage Personal Enhancement, a treatment approach aimed at each stage of adulthood. The program entails less invasive steps at earlier stages, so that women can avoid the need for more dramatic, aggressive procedures in the future.

Dr. Grant consults with patients to help them understand what will help them look their best at every age, and helps them choose the least invasive, most effective options. “It is far better to begin age maintenance treatments before menopause occurs than after,” he explains. Because menopause significantly reduces the elasticity of a woman’s skin, cosmetic procedures are more long-lasting and effective when done earlier.

During their 20′s, patients might consider focusing on personal fitness and weight control, medically indicated skin care, minimally invasive skin treatments such as dermabrasion, and spider vein reduction. In their 30′s, discreet surgical procedures for the eyes, face, and neck might be used to prolong the period of time that a woman looks her best as menopause approaches. During their 40′s and 50′s, patients might consider “judicious use of Botox” to reduce wrinkles, laser resurfacing, or corrective (rather than preventive) face and neck lifts.
